Hundreds of Scouts from all corners of Maine will descend upon L.L.Bean on Saturday, May 16 for a full day of hands-on demonstrations, activities, games and more as part of L.L.Bean’s annual weekend-long celebration of all things camping
FREEPORT – Internationally recognized outdoor retailer L.L.Bean, best known for its Bean Boot, everyday free shipping and 100% satisfaction guarantee will be hosting its annual Camping Weekend beginning Friday, May 15 and going through Sunday, May 17 at L.L.Bean’s Flagship Store in Freeport.
L.L.Bean’s Camping Weekend begins on Friday at 7 p.m., with speaker Ed Webster, renowned mountaineer, giving a talk on his successful attempt to establish a new route up Mt. Everest. Entitled “Everest the Hard Way,” Ed will discuss the new route up the east face of Everest he and his three companions successfully established, when they summited Everest with no Sherpa support, no radios and no bottled oxygen. The weekend continues with a tent city, showcasing several types of fully set-up campsites, a full roster of seminars and demonstrations, interactive adventures and activities and more.
Highlighting the event will the 1st annual Boy Scouts of America Scout-O-Rama on Saturday, May 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in L.L.Bean’s Discovery Park. It is expected to be the largest gathering of Boy Scouts in the State of Maine, with hundreds of Scouts coming from all over Maine. The Scout-O-Rama will begin with a Boy Scout parade down Maine Street, beginning at 9 a.m. with the rest of the day focusing on demonstrations, clinics, and games. Additional activities include a rock climbing wall and pinewood derby races. All activities are open to the public and all Cub Scout and Boy Scout Troops are encouraged to participate.
“This inaugural event is designed to not only showcase Maine’s Scouting program, but to also help introduce kids and Scout leaders alike to new and exciting outdoor activities,” said Eric Tarbox, Scout Executive with the Pine Tree Council, Boy Scouts of America. “We’re expecting several hundred, maybe even thousands of Scouts from all across the state to join us for this first-ever Scouting event of this type in Maine.”
