BANGOR – If you need a new way to tell someone “I Love You”, the Hammond Street Senior Center has you covered.
A crafting committee at the center has spent months putting together little boxes to celebrate May Day coming up May first.
The baskets are a fun way to celebrate an old tradition.
“A may basket is actually delivered by a loved one on may day and in years past, they would ring the bell and then run and whoever the basket was for would run out the door and catch them and give them a kiss. Today it’s a little more calm, and you can give them to somebody in the nursing home or a friend, and not probably expect a kiss but you still might get one.” Kathy Bernier, Executive Director, Hammond Street Senior Center
Each basket comes with a little note telling the story of may day. The gifts are 2 dollars for a basket, or 4 dollars for a basket of fudge. They can be purchased and picked up at the Senior Center in Downtown Bangor.
