BANGOR – It’s been a difficult time for the workers who lost their jobs when the paper mill closed in Bucksport.
Some are having to find new ways to support their families including ten former workers who are taking a special course at Eastern Maine Community College.
They’ve enrolled in a customized fine woodworking and cabinet making program.
Their instructors say the hope is that they’ll learn a trade they can use when they return to the workforce and say the students are learning quickly.
“I would have to say these students are a prime example of what a student should be. They’re early, they have their homework done, they’re ready for tests and their grades are excellent. They have a good work ethic obviously from their career at the mill. They support each other so it’s been excellent.” Arand Auclair, Eastern Maine Community College
The EMCC staff says they’ve seen an increase in the demand for workers at Maine’s boat building companies as well as in fine furniture and cabinet making businesses.
