BAR HARBOR — In seeking ways to encourage women entrepreneurs and women in business, YWCA Mount Desert Island is helping out Bar Harbor’s latest woman-owned business. YWCA Mount Desert Island on March 31 announced its sponsorship of the conference room at Anchorspace, the area’s first coworking office space.
YWCA MDI will, in turn, utilize Anchorspace as a secure and private place to have meetings.
“Since part of the YWCA’s stated mission is to empower women, we take seriously requests for advancing women in business, including Anchorspace itself,” said YWCA Mount Desert Island Executive Director Jackie Davidson.
Davidson noted that offering space for women and women’s groups advances her organization’s mission in the community: “With the time we have been given for the sponsorship of the conference room at Anchorspace, we will offer our residents a chance to schedule meetings with mentors, or potential employers.”
According to Davidson, several organizations with which YWCA Mount Desert Island partners, such as the Island Arts Association, will be able to utilize this meeting space.
YWCA MDI’s sponsorship in the amount of $4,800 will help Anchorspace in its mission to help small businesses, nonprofits, and visitors to the Bar Harbor area by providing a place to grow and succeed.
Anchorspace founder and Bar Harbor resident Nicole Ouellette envisions uses ranging from local residents needing a private, neutral location to meet with state agencies, to women entrepreneurs hosting potential large clients.
“Hundreds of people will use the conference room in addition to YWCA MDI utilizing it on a regular basis,” said Ouellette. “We’re excited for not only for meeting room uses we hadn’t anticipated but that this is a particular opportunity for women in business, being a woman owned business ourselves. I thought a sponsorship was a good win-win for a potential partner.”
YWCA MDI is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Established in 1904 in Bar Harbor, the non-profit offers short and long term housing for women as well as challenging and stimulating programs for both women and children.
