BANGOR – Hackers are finding more ways to get your information and then use it to buy things.
A new threat shows scammers are buying up Mainers information… making duplicated cards and using them locally. Jane carpenter of “Maine Identify Services” says this is kind of threat is unique because banks won’t be able to tell whether purchases are legitimate or not.
The data was probably stolen from one of the major data breeches last year at Staples, Home Depot, Shaws… even Otto’s Pizza. When the hackers are selling the information… they now send the zip codes of where purchases were last made on that card.
Jon Paradise of the Maine Credit Union League says hackers have so much information… they don’t often sell it all at once… and months after a breech… you are hit with fraudulent charges when you least expect it.
