BANGOR – Kids from all over mixed together food and friendships at a kids culinary camp at Eastern Maine Community College.
“They get a chance to interact with each other and play and learn something new and try different things and all of that kind of unifies them and brings them together as a cohesive unit,” said Alissa Gervais, director of Residential Life and Activities at EMCC.
This weeklong camp teaches kids how to cook using steamers, broilers, pizza ovens and more — all while emphasizing the importance of kitchen safety.
“Some of these things I learned here I wouldn’t choose to make at home and I think it’s a good experience for everyone that likes cooking and baking,” said camper Tracy Alsbrook.
Another camper, Grace Mcinnis, said, “They teach us really good things and I finally learned how to cut because before I was just like slamming the table but now I can actually cut.”
In the kitchen is where kids get a hands-on learning experience.
“With working with youth over time, we found that sometimes their dietary choices consist chicken nuggets and boxed macaroni and cheese or they’re not really exposed to a whole lot of ethnic cuisine,” said Gervais. “We really wanted to get them the opportunity to be hands-on.”
This camp inspired one camper to continue her passion for cooking. Elia Ramsay-Fox said she wants to go to school to become a chef and someday open up her own restaurant.
“I want to own a French restaurant, with things with like escargot that are fun,” Ramsay-Fox said.
