BANGOR – The once-popular site for roller skating will soon be home to something new.
The former Great Skates Rolling Entertainment Center on Sylvan Road is undergoing construction to house the students of Stillwater Academy.
The special-purpose private school helps students aged 5 to 20 who have certain challenges learning in traditional school settings.
Stillwater Academy currently operates out of two buildings in Brewer and has 27 students.
The school’s director said it was time to move to a bigger space.
“We’ll have a gym on-site. We’ll have showers on-site, laundry facilities, bigger classrooms and it’s all on one floor so that we’re all together instead of kind of separated into little pods,” said Director Jody Raymond.
Raymond said that the academy is set to reopen in the new location on Sept. 3.
He said he plans to have an open house for students and their parents as well as an open house for the public.
