EMCC offering free medical assistant program Featured

BANGOR - There is a desperate need for medical assistants in the greater Bangor area, according to Liz Russell, the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Eastern Maine Community College.

With the help from Harold Alfond Foundation and the Foundation for Maine's Community College's, EMCC is offering a one year medical assistant program to 40 qualifying students for no cost.

"Eastern Maine Community College is very please to be able to provide free education to 40 individuals interested in perusing medical assisting as a career," Russell said.

The cost most students pay for tuition, fees, textbooks and even a set of scrubs is waived for accepted students.

"As a faculty member here I'm thrilled to be offering this program and getting the chance to teach most of the classes in this program," Angela Parks, a faculty member in the medical assistant program, said.

Alexandra Lynds is a recent graduate from the medical assistant program. She's now accepted a surgical position within Waldo County General Hospital.

"I knew for a fact that I was going to be absolutely prepared when it came to working in the field," Lynds said.

Angela Parks said it's a very hands on learning experience. She said the career options are endless for medical assistants, and this program will cater specifically to what the student is looking to do within the field.

"They're going to learn it best by doing it and seeing it and applying it," said Parks. "That is our motto here."

Parks said these students will also have the support to follow their dreams.

"They can expect instructors who will be there every step of the day from day one to day infinity," Parks said.
