Bakers get ready for whoopie pie festival

Written by

DEXTER - Of the 22 vendors baking for the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival in Dover-Foxcroft this weekend, one baker doesn't have to drive too far.

Heather Villone runs her made to order business, called Sweetie Pies, out of her home in Dexter.

A solo baker - she's won several awards since first participating in the festival five years ago.

But Villone said she first started making whoopie pies after her husband's coworkers tasted her other baked goods.

"Some of the guys, they used to get whoopie pies from the vending machine and they asked my husband, 'does your wife make whoopie pies?'. And I said 'no, I don't make whoopie pies but I could try it', and he was like 'well, if you send them in every week I'll buy them from you', so that's how I started."

Villone will have about a dozen whoopie pie flavors at the festival, and her table will be across from the fire station.

For those who can't attend, she takes orders by the dozen.

The Maine Whoopie Pie Festival takes place Saturday in Dover-Foxcroft from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
