DOVER – FOXCROFT – After looking for the right bed and breakfast to buy all over the country, a California couple found their choice in Dover-Foxcroft.
“This is sort of one of those things on the life bucket list,” said Mike Loomis, one of the new co-owners of Freedom House Bed & Breakfast.
Mike and Elizabeth Loomis closed on the B&B in March, and after a couple weeks of training under the previous owners, made the business their own.
“It hasn’t let up with the hospital, and the academy, and the guys working on the ice arena, it’s been pretty steady,” said Mike.
The couple moved from northern California, but the sight of a Dunkin Donuts mug and Red Sox cap around the B&B are no joke.
Mike and Elizabeth both grew up in Massachusetts and said there’s just something about New England that they missed…
“End of January is when we first visited here. And there was a little bit of snow, you know like up to the windows,” joked Mike. “When you see a high school kid go to school on a snowmobile, that’s a little different.”
The couple said the property has been a B&B since 2005, but the building dates back to 1888.
There are three rooms in the main house, and four in a cottage in the back of the property.
Since taking over, the Loomis’s are taking care of structural issues, painting, and swapping furniture – and adding some conversation pieces that reflect Maine.
“We’ve always entertained a lot…I love creating little vignettes, little destinations within our property that are conducive to conversation, and people feeling comfortable and relaxed,” said Elizabeth.
