CALAIS – Construction is underway to create the Downeast Broadband Utility.
The municipalities of Calais and Baileyville formed a public utility to bring high-speed internet to the area.
Officials from the St. Croix Valley Chamber of Commerce said that while the fiber optics are being laid now, the initiative has been in the works for a couple of years.
They are hoping to bring people to the area.
“There’s lots and lots of people, young people, who would love this area, but what they need is access to high-speed internet so they can do their jobs from home,” chamber Chairman Michael Carmody said.
The towns will own the fiber optic, meaning internet service providers will be leasing from the municipal utility to service customers.
