According to the American Red Cross, drowning is a leading cause of death for children.
To prevent drowning, Red Cross officials encourage everyone in the family learn how to swim.
For those who don't know, safety around water goes beyond just learning how to swim, Red Cross Executive Director Caroline King said.
"Layers of protection. Keep an eye on your children, make sure you have gates around your pool, and make sure you know when children can learn how to open those gates," King said.
King said knowing CPR also is important in an emergency.
The Red Cross offers CPR and first aid training both online and in person.
