AUGUSTA – State senators unanimously passed a measure to honor Maine State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell.
The Maine State Senate voted yes on a bill Thursday that would rename a bridge on Route 11 in Indian Purchase Township the “Detective Benjamin Campbell Bridge”. The bridge is currently known as the West Branch Bridge.
Campbell died in a freak accident on I-95 in Hampden earlier this year, while he was trying to help a stranded driver.
On Friday, the bill’s sponsor reflected on the vote, and said this is the right thing to do – to memorialize the detective near where his wife and son live in Millinocket.
“It’s a nice thing to be able to do, as small as it may be,” said Sen. Jim Dill, D – Old Town. “People traveling that way, coming down state, they’ll be crossing that bridge and there will be a plaque there as well.”
Sen. Dill said he expects Governor Janet Mills to sign the bill into law next week, and if that happens a renaming dedication ceremony will likely take place this summer on the bridge.
