BELFAST – The developer of a proposed salmon farm in Belfast has selected the builder for the project.
Nordic Aquafarms announced Tuesday afternoon the Rhode Island-based Gilbane Building Company will lead the construction management team for the Belfast project.
The announcement stated the 850,000 square foot salmon farm will be built in two phases, with 2021 as the date for the first phase of the plan to be operational.
According to Belfast Economic Development Director Thomas Kittredge, the project still needs local, state and federal permit approvals.
Previous statements from company officials have placed a price tag of nearly half a billion dollars on the development.
The salmon farm plan calls for it to be built on 54 acres of land off Route 1 in Belfast.
