ELLSWORTH – It’s been almost exactly one year since the body of a Bar Harbor teen was found in the woods near her hometown’s downtown.
Jury selection began Monday for the rape and murder trial of Bar Harbor resident Jalique Keene who is accused of killing his friend and former classmate, 19-year-old Mikaela Conley.
The trial is expected to start Tuesday in Hancock County Superior Court, according to defense attorney Jeffrey Toothaker.
Keene, 22, is charged with assaulting and strangling the teenager on June 1 of last year on the grounds of the local elementary school.
Conley and Keene both attended Mount Desert Island High School where he was a high school football standout. She was well known because she worked at her parent’s restaurant, 2 Cats.
According to court documents, Keene is seen on video surveillance dragging what appears to be Conley’s body off school grounds to a wooded area, where she was found the following day.
The State Medical Examiner’s office determined the teenager died of blunt force trauma and strangulation.
Keene has been held at the Hancock County Jail since his arrest.
