Mainers weigh in on bicentennial flag design

Written by

STATEWIDE - Mainers have spoken on what they want to see for the state's bicentennial flag.

The Secretary of State's Office released the results of a survey through which more than 6,500 people chose their favorite of three designs.

Fifty-nine percent of those who voted chose a variation of the original state flag from 1901, a simple depiction of a pine tree against a field of blue that represents the sky, and a lighter blue representing water.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap will use the survey results to help make his final decision on a bicentennial flag, which he will announce this week.

The flag will be flown throughout 2020 to celebrate Maine's 200 years of statehood.
