Machias Police Chief Grady Dwelley said Ashley Falanka and Michael Koski, both 19, were on a motorcycle traveling on Elm Street near the Maine Wild Blueberry Co. factory when it collided with an oncoming car.
The collision happened near the center line, the chief said, and Maine State Police are reconstructing the crash.
According to a statement from UMaine Machias, Falanka was a psychology and community studies major from Mount Chase. The statement went on to say she will be remembered for her smile, love of music and film, and passion for raising funds for suicide awareness.
The university spokeswoman said Koski was a marine biology major from Spencer, New York, who was a member of the 2017 men’s soccer team and a community adviser. She said he loved horses and was a competitive polo player.
The Machias police chief said both died at the scene.
Dwelley said the driver of the car was taken to Down East Community Hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
UMaine spokeswoman Margaret Nagle said gatherings were held Monday at the Machias campus for those grieving and counseling for students and staff is available.
Dwelley says the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
