A spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety said it appears 27 year-old Thomas Doyan shot and killed his ex-girlfriend, 30 year old Allison Parker, before turning the gun on himself.
The couple was together for about 3 years and living with Parker's parents.
Parker recently moved out of her parents home, but went back with a girlfriend to get some belongings.
Her parents and girlfriend, who were also in the home, fled and called state police after hearing gunshots from an upstairs bedroom.
State Police officers tell us they arrived to the scene shortly before 10 this morning and neighbors were evacuated shortly after.
Bigelow Road was closed off as more units, including the crisis negotiation team, showed up.
Neighbors say they were frightened when told to evacuate this morning.
"I answered the door because somebody was knocking on it and it was a State Police man and he said 'how many people are here?' and I said 'why do you wanna know?'" said Shelley Stevens, a neighbor who was evacuated during the standoff. "He said 'you need to evacuate. You can't take anything with you. You just need to take everybody and get out.'"
"The State Police Tact Team, as well as the Crisis Negotiations Team from our agency were called in. We attempted to make contact via phone." said Lt. Mark Holmquist of the Maine State Police. "There was no contact that was made and then the tactical team did enter the residence and found the two deceased individuals in an upstairs bedroom."
Parker is the mother of a 7 year-old daughter, but Doyan was not the father.
Their bodies are being taken to Augusta for autopsies.
