Annual 5K benefits American Folk Festival

BANGOR - What started as an overcast morning in Bangor got a little color Saturday.

The sixth annual Color Bangor 5K kicked off at the Bangor Waterfront. Runners and walkers took to the route.

Along the route, the more than two hundred participants got sprayed with a rainbow of colored powders.

The 5K raises money for the American Folk Festival, which takes place in Bangor every summer.

"This adds a few thousand dollars to the bottom line and every single contribution, every single registration, every single volunteer is so crucial to making that happen," said Heather McCarthy, the executive director of the American Folk Festival.

The event also features a celebrity color pelt, where kids can douse their favorite TV newscasters with colors.

ABC7 and Fox22's own Alex Bobbyn and Devin Martin were good enough sports to participate, as was Bangor City Councilor Ben Sprague.

Event organizers said after six years of the color fun run, this will be the last one.

They're looking to find something new to raise money for the festival next year.
