Fire officials seeking grant for new training center

BANGOR - Fire department officials are applying for a grant to replace their training facility.

The $509,000 grant would be used to construct a new burn building used to train firefighters for a variety of scenarios.

Fire Chief Tom Higgins said the department's current burn building was built by volunteers in 1988.

"It was built with cinder blocks, it was built with good intentions and it's done a wonderful job for years. There's been hundreds and hundreds of firefighters that have been tested and trained out there for different certifications and the building's at the end of its useful life," Higgins said.

The grant money fire department officials are seeking is part of $1.5 million already set aside by the state legislature to improve firefighter training facilities throughout Maine.

Higgins said he expects to find out if the city has been awarded the grant by the beginning of July.
