Police land grant to curb underage drinking

Written by

WINSLOW - Members of the Winslow Police Department are taking extra steps to combat underage drinking, thanks to a $2,000 grant.

The grant will fund compliance checks and party patrols to look for underage drinking throughout Winslow.

The police will use undercover officers to see who is providing minors with alcohol and they will use another resource as well.

"We solicit a volunteer who's under the age of 21 and we provide them with funds and we oversee them to go into establishments that serve alcohol. It could be a convenience store, it could be a restaurant, and they go in and they attempt to buy alcohol," Police Chief Shawn O'Leary said.

If the volunteers do get served, at worst the businesses will receive an administrative violation.
