Fitness challenge raises funds for NROTC scholarship

ORONO- On Saturday, around 150 people were at the University of Maine to take part in the annual First Lieutenant Zimmerman challenge.

1st Lt. James Zimmerman, a UMaine alumni, was killed in 2010 during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

 

The fitness challenge fundraises for the 1st Lt. James Zimmerman Memorial Fund that helps NROTC students.

 

According to event organizers they've the event raised around $4,500.

 

"There's a 5K ruck they have to do, some low crawls, some high crawls, carrying their teammates, working as a group, doing some push-ups, doing some pull ups, basically anything you would think of military classic working out and physical efforts." said Mark Talvacchia, the President of UMaine's Blue and Gold Team. "It's a great event."
