Thai New Year celebration starts Saturday

BANGOR - The Thai New Year is a national three-day holiday that kicks off Saturday, and runs through Monday.

The traditional Buddhist holiday includes a water festival, where a person's bad luck and sins are washed away with the pouring of water.

 

“What they do in Thai new years, we cook special food they call laab,” said Wirawan Lungvian, owner of Mama D, in downtown Bangor. “Laab is mean lucky or good luck. And we gonna cook some special noodles ... Noodle have to be long noodle, that's why they call give you long life.”

 

In addition to the special holiday foods, the Bangor restaurant is offering discounts for anyone who wears a Thai or Hawaiian-style shirt or attire during the holiday.
