AUGUSTA - The founder and director of the Millinocket Marathon was honored in Augusta.

Gary Allen received the prestigious Governor's Conference on Tourism Originality Award Wednesday afternoon.

Even though Allen has spearheaded many endurance events in Maine over the years, this award specifically recognizes his role in the Millinocket Marathon, which has earned national recognition for its free to participate, pay it forward platform.

The marathon has attracted thousands to the Katahdin region and has provided a major economic boost to the former mill town.

This is the fifth year the award has been presented, and Allen is the first individual person to receive the award.
