VAN BUREN – A fire in Van Buren left two downtown buildings completely destroyed.
Van Buren fire officials said the fire broke out around nine a.m. Sunday on Main Street. Part of the street had to be shut down.
Those at the nearby Aroostook Hospitality Inn said the two business buildings, formerly Heberts Rexall and Ezzy’s Insurance, had moved to other locations before the fire.
There were tenants living upstairs, but fire officials said everyone made it out safely, and they were able to save a cat.
Fire crews were on scene most of the day, putting out hot spots into Sunday night.
A cause is yet to be determined, but according to fire officials, the buildings were connected and older, dating back to possibly the late 1800’s.
An excavator had to be called in to tear the rest of the two buildings down so they weren’t a threat to other nearby structures.
No one was hurt.
