MILLINOCKET – A tight-knit community, Millinocket was shaken by the news of Maine State Police Detective Ben Campbell’s death.
Detective Campbell died in the line of duty Wednesday morning while trying to help someone. The feeling throughout town was a sense of loss.
Nobody that ABC7/FOX22 spoke with was willing to be interviewed on camera. They said the trooper’s death was too fresh to discuss.
Employees at a local restaurant choked back tears as they spoke of the community’s loss. They knew Campbell’s wife, Hilary, since she was a little girl and the young family was in just last week.
Across the street, Russ’s Barber Shop was empty except for the barber who said he used to cut Campbell’s hair.
He said Campbell was a great guy and very down to earth.
Others said the Campbells are the nicest family and what happened is awful.
A motorcade left the medical examiners office Thursday afternoon carrying the the body of Detective Ben Campbell back to Millinocket where he was welcomed by law enforcement officers, first responders, family and members from the community.
A Maine state police spokesman says, funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as they are finalized.
