According to a spokesperson for Northern Light, the health system's board of directors voted unanimously Wednesday afternoon to move ahead with plans to merge with the Dover-Foxcroft hospital.
Mayo Regional hospital officials previously said the move would ensure quality care for the region and cited the hospital's progressively worsening financial situation as a reason for the merger.
Wednesday's vote is not the final step, however. The merger also requires approval from the Maine Legislature.
Officials said that if the merger is approved, Mayo Regional would become the 10th hospital in the Northern Light system.
