Mainers welcome the first day of spring Featured

BANGOR - Spring is officially here. With the weather starting to warm up, local business are gearing up for the season.

With temperatures reaching the low 40s Wednesday, people began to head outside and partake in outdoor activities.

One way people can enjoy springtime is through gardening.

"Spring for us is always crazy, as soon as the snow melts it's like everybody is unearthed. Everybody just has so much cabin fever, so by the time the ground is unfrozen, it is bonkers here," says Sprague's Nursery Wholesale Manager Melissa Higgins.

Higgins says spring is the opportune time to go out and get your hands dirty

"It's the best planting time too, really for getting things in the ground. They require less watering and it is less stressful to plant in the spring then in the hot summer," Higgins said.

With garden nurseries all over the state, it's easy to enjoy the spring sunshine in your area.

"Everybody wants to stay local, part of our our campaign slogan this year was what's more local than your own backyard. Everybody can grow anything you just have to give it a shot, buy your plants from somewhere reputable and you'll have great success," Higgins said.

The days are getting longer, but it might still be a while before the warmer weather is really here to stay.

Some local business owners say spring seems to get a lot of people out to enjoy a tasty treat.

"Our sales pretty much double. We are so busy all the time, you see us all running around in here, getting everybody their stuff," said Lily, a worker for Jimmie's Ice Cream and Grill. "But as soon as the weather gets up, then every body wants to come in here and get their favorite thing, their flurries, their sundaes."
