With the growing Mennonite and Amish populations in the more rural areas of northern Penobscot and southern Aroostook counties, Rep. Stephen Stanley, D- Medway, proposed legislation that would require all horse-drawn carriages and wagons operated at night to display a rear reflector.
According to Stanley, the horse-drawn vehicles do a good job traveling with the flow of traffic and this bill is only intended to make them more visible at night to motorists.
"It's a hilly region. Traffic moves right along and people need to drive these roads. At the same time, for the Amish, if it's at night, they can't see the carriage," he said.
If enacted, the bill will improve safety on the roads for those riding in cars and those in slow-moving buggies.
