Schools facing shortage of substitutes

Written by

STATEWIDE - Sumner High School in Sullivan was closed Monday because several staff members called in sick and there were not enough substitutes to fill the vacancies.

ABC 7/Fox 22 reached out to the Maine Department of Education to see if this was an issue elsewhere.

"We're hearing from the field across the state that districts are struggling to fill the positions for substitute teachers and substitute bus drivers as well," spokeswoman Kelli Deveaux said.

Deveaux said each school department decides the criteria needed to be a substitute teacher.
