On Monday night, the Old Town City Council's Public Services Committee considered joining them.
Council President Stan Peterson said Monday's discussion was the first that city officials have had on the topic. He said there were many factors to consider, including reaching out to local businesses.
"We're discussing plastic bags 'cause at the last council meeting, Councilor Janet Klitch brought up that if we took the mass of the entire population of the entire world, there's seven times that amount of plastic in the ocean floating around and somebody needs to start somewhere to stop that," Peterson said.
At the end of the committee meeting, Peterson said city officials planned to wait to see what the Maine Legislature does with regard to plastic bags before taking any action.
