Women rescued from icy coastal trail

CUTLER - After spending half the night in the Washington County woods, a pair of stranded hikers were rescued early Monday morning.

It took first responders nearly five hours to rescue Staci McCarthy, 53, and 73-year-old Margaret Ross from an icy bold coast trail in Cutler, according to a spokesperson for the Maine Warden Service.

Spokesman Mark Latti said the Pembroke women hiked nearly three miles of the trail before realizing they weren't going to make it back to their car by nightfall.

Latti said McCarthy called 911 and game wardens were able to pinpoint their location before her phone's battery died. He said the women were returned safe and sound to their vehicle in Cutler around 2 a.m.
