Oxford fire chief laid to rest

SOUTH PARIS (WGME) - For the second time in less than a week, members of Maine's firefighting community are mourning the loss of one of their own.

The memorial service for Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sacco was held Sunday morning at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

Sacco suffered a medical problem and died in Portland last week while he was attending the service for fallen Berwick fire Capt. Joel Barnes.

Those who worked alongside Sacco said when he wasn't working, he was on the beach spending time with his family and dogs.

"Gary, I know you're here with us today. Brother, I know you're watching over us and, yes, you can critique me, as you often did. I hope this tribute is what you would've wanted. You have left us way too soon in your young life," said Richard Shepherd of the Casco Fire-Rescue Department.

More than 300 people, including fellow firefighters, attended Sunday's service.
