Maine Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said the exact cause of the altercation is still unknown but they're working to figure out the details.
"22-year-old Austin McDevitt of Morrill was charged with murder," McCausland said. "He was charged at about 11:30 this morning at the Waldo County Sheriff's Office."
According to McCausland, McDevitt was on the 568 Oak Hill Road property when he shot and killed Shane Sauer. A woman was also present during the incident, but has yet to be identified. According to Maine State Police, all three of them knew each other, but none lived In the home.
"At this point we're still trying to determine the circumstances of what happened," McCausland said. "There's a lot of work that is going to have to be completed today and most likely tomorrow. So all that will come together as we put this case together."
Maine State Police officers worked with the Waldo County Sheriff's Office and Belfast Police Department on Friday. The state police spokesman said evidence technicians will continue to work at the crime scene throughout the weekend.
"McDevitt is going to be taken to the two bridges jail in Wiscasset later today," McCausland said. "He'll be making his first court appearance in superior court here in Belfast early next week."
McCausland said there are others who live on the property, but none are involved in the shooting. He also declined to say who called 911 to report the incident.
