"It was a great night." Democratic Representative Elect, Joe Perry, said. "People aren't used to voting in March for a house seat, so it was really nice to see so many people come out. It was a great day. I'm very happy."
Democrat Joe Perry will now be representing House District 124 in Augusta.
He and political newcomer, Republican Thomas White, have been campaigning for months for the seat vacated by Attorney General Aaron Frey.
"I am extremely proud of the campaign that we ran." White said. "We ran hard. We stayed clean and we talked about the issues that mattered to Maine families and businesses."
Perry won with 719 of the 1,109 votes cast.
He says excited to get started working on the state budget and with Governor Mills.
"I mean I'm really excited." Perry said. "I think Governor Janet Mills is doing a great job. I served with her in the Maine house. I'm really excited to get back to work and she really wants to help people and I want to be there with her to do it."
Perry still needs to be sworn in, but says he hopes to be working in Augusta by next week.
"It is really great to see that Joe Perry will be returning to the house" Frey said. "I anticipate he's going to do some really great work for the people of Bangor and Orono."
Perry will serve out the remainder of Frey's term which runs through December 2020.
