Hope for Homeless growing

Written by

BANGOR - A grassroots organization continues to grow in the Bangor area, according to the woman who founded it.

Ann Sweeney said Hope for Homeless has received donations from Ireland and Saudi Arabia as well locally.

Sweeney said the effort began by giving out Dunkin' cards, hygiene packs and pairs of socks and that now the group is collecting donations from area businesses.

According to Sweeney, Hope for Homeless collects and distributes everything from sleeping bags and tents to jeans and hoodies.

Sweeney said she can feel the impact she is having while handing out donations.

"I was handing out cards and a gentleman says, 'I've got the two you handed out before. I am going to have three now' in his pocket. And I said, 'You're not using them?' He said, 'No, I keep them. It reminds me that someone cared,'" Sweeney said.

Sweeney said she started the initiative to help deal with the shock of her husband's getting cancer.
