Bangor Fire Department reacts to passing of Capt. Joel Barnes

BANGOR - Among those in attendance at Captain Joel Barnes funeral were about a dozen members of the Bangor Fire Department.

The 32 year old died fighting an apartment fire in Berwick last Friday.

The four-alarm fire sent four other firefighters to the hospital.

All tenants made it out safely, but Barnes reportedly died trying to save another firefighter inside.

Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Nadeau from Bangor says this tragedy reminds them of what they risk each day.

Nadeau describes the fire service as a family.

"It's an unfortunate tragedy." Nadeau said. "I'd like to reach out and let his family know Bangor Fire supports them, for this tragedy and for the Berwick Fire Department also."

Nadeau says departments from across the nation have been showing support for the Berwick Fire Department.
