BANGOR – University of Maine at Augusta students learning about dentistry gave children free checkups Friday through the Give Kids a Smile Day program.
The UMA seniors, in partnership with the American Dental Association, cleaned and brightened teeth. They checked for cavities and made X-rays when needed for 43 local children through the school’s Dental Health Clinic.
“We get to work with children from almost newborns under a year old, up to I think the oldest we have today is 16, so it’s a great experience to work with kids of all ages,” said Katherine Doyen, a UMA senior studying dental health.
Local dentists who volunteered their time and ability also were on hand to help when needed.
