There's been a lot of momentum in the state and nationally to try and change the name of the day.
The State and Local Government committee discussed the bill.
In the next couple of weeks it will go to the House for a vote and then to the Senate.
"I'm seeing a big shift. When this has come up in the past, there hasn't been much support, but I'm seeing more people, democrats, republicans, independents, who say that they didn't in the past go for it, but they're going to now," said Rep. Benjamin Collings, D-Portland. "I think a lot of that is momentum from this grounds well of support from local communities."
Several Maine communities have adopted Indigenous' Peoples Day, including Bangor and Portland.
