Free ice fishing draws hundreds

STATEWIDE - Last weekend marked Maine's free fishing days and there were ice fishing derbies across the state.

Maine's free fishing days allow ice fishing without a license.

More than 250 people were on Silver Lake in Bucksport to participate in the Bucks Mills Rod & Gun Club's annual ice fishing derby, according to organizers of that event.

Club President Bruce Ashmore said the derby is held on free fishing days so that more people are able to attend.

"It's great, especially this time of year, having a big social function like this where you can get people outdoors even when it's cold," Ashmore said. "We've got hundreds of people participating. Then it's a good day in Maine."
