Annual Winter Whiteout drive set for Saturday

Written by

BANGOR - The people behind the Welcome to Housing project are hoping for a whiteout on Saturday and it has nothing to do with snow.

Welcome to Housing's Home Goods Bank helps people make the transition from living in shelters to more permanent housing.

The group assists area homeless, veterans, those escaping domestic violence, fire victims and others by providing everyday household items, including paper products.

On Saturday, with the assistance of students from the University of Maine's Bodwell Center for Service and Volunteerism, Welcome to Housing will hold its annual donation drive at Shaw's Supermarket in Bangor.

"We call it the Winter Whiteout Paper Drive. We collect toilet paper, napkins, tissues, personal care items, things like that, out in front of Shaw's, then we get them to people in need," said Welcome to Housing Founder Chris Olsen.

In case of inclement weather, the Winter Whiteout will be postponed to Saturday, Feb. 23.
