Searsport Elementary donates to local food pantry Featured

SEARSPORT - Students from Searsport Elementary School are going for the gold and helping the community.

"I've been asking people if they would like to help people in need," one of the students said.

Two buses filled with students from Searsport Elementary School arrived at the Methodist Food Pantry on Tuesday morning.

"We collected food for people in need and gave it to the local food cupboard," fourth-grader Kaitlyn Ryan said.

According to one of their teachers, students collected more than 300 pounds of food to donate.

"This means a lot. We have to buy food. We get some food furnished by the government. Most of it is bought with donations of money, but this makes a lot of difference because there's more of a demand out there right now for food with winter, the cold weather and the government shutdown."

The donation is a part of the Winterkids Winter Games.

Students and teachers from 31 elementary schools are competing throughout the winter in an effort to stay healthy and active. The top-scoring school receives $5,000.

"This is the second year we're participating in the Winterkids Winter Games," a teacher said. "We're really excited to do this."

She also said students collected the donations as part of the week focused on nutrition.

As of now, Searsport Elementary is in first place in the Winter Games and students have their eyes set on winning.
