WINTERPORT – Ice skating is an outdoor sport that can be enjoyed by the entire family, even those who watch from the sidelines.
That’s why the town of Winterport has prepared and opened their outdoor public skating rink at Abbot Park for anyone who wants to hit the ice.
“We get people saying this is something they did when they were kids,” said Greg DeSilva, Winterport Parks and Recreation director. “We have a skate night were we put out a couple fire barrels here and we put out some brownies and some hot chocolate and the parents get to socialize and hang out, which they don’t often get to do these days and the kids come out and have a blast under the lights we have here.”
Skate nights are held whenever it’s around 20 degrees, DeSilva said, saying he expects to host one Friday night, if the weather holds.
The ice rink is free to use and is located at the end of Park Street, near the Victoria Grant Civic Center. There is also a great sledding hill on the opposite side of the parking lot.
