February food stamps to be issued early

Written by

STATEWIDE - Mainers who receive food stamps can expect February's allotment earlier, according to Gov. Janet Mills' press secretary.

According to spokesperson Lindsey Crete, the move is an effort to offset any future damage if the government shutdown continues into February.

The February benefit will be electronically transferred on Jan. 17.

The governor's spokesperson stressed this will be the only payment for February.

Maine's acting commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services Jeanne Lambrew is urging recipients to watch their February food budget closely.

Formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a federally funded program administered by the states.

According to a statement from the governor's office, about 180,000 Mainers received SNAP benefits in fiscal year 2017.
