Feeding Bangor to start next month

Written by

BANGOR - Feeding Bangor, a grass-roots effort to put food on the table of needy older residents in the city, will start handing out food next month.

Welcome to Housing in Old Town is helping to pay for the food. Donations are also being accepted.

“We are starting our food distribution network right here at Joe's Market,” said Melissa Newbury, organizer. “We're going to do senior commodity boxes in partnership with Eastern Area Agency on Aging."

Joe Perry, the owner of the store, said he sits on the food cupboard board and knows firsthand there are people in the area who go hungry.

“There is a need in this area and there was no location in this area,” Perry said. “That is one of the obstacles - finding a location is expensive. Doing this out of a truck in our parking lot in an area where there is people in need just made perfect sense.”

Those who want to sign up can contact the Melissa Newbury at 944-6634 or the Eastern Area Agency on Aging at 941-2865, extension 167.

The first food boxes will be handed out from noon to 2 p.m. on Jan 16, and every third Wednesday of the month after that.
