SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Business has not slowed down with the departure of tourist season for the folks at a Southwest Harbor lobster pier.
They say plenty of people are ordering lobsters just in time for the holidays.
“It’s become an American tradition, it seems, around Christmas time,” said Justin Snyder, Dockside Manager at Beal’s Lobster Pier.
People across the nation are in the market for Maine lobster this time of year and boxes upon boxes are leaving the business in Southwest Harbor.
“We’re shipping boxes all day, every day, 5 days a week,” said Snyder.
Snyder’s family bought the establishment 5 years ago after being longtime customers for more than 40 years.
Now, he and his crew are in charge of steaming up and shipping out these craved crustaceans.
“We’re shipping our boxes all over the United States,” he said. “We go nationwide from Maine to Florida to California, Alaska and Hawaii too, and everywhere in between.”
Today, staff members are loading up around 20 parcels.
The crew expects to send out 150 to 200 during the holiday season.
“When the winter time starts to slow down around here,” said Snyder, “the holiday traffic for lobsters, especially with the lobstermen, really pick up.”
Holiday traffic is not exclusive to Christmas, as he notes that he also sees an uptick around Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.
But the lobster sales are not the only sweet part for Snyder.
“When you spend a lot of time with lobstermen,” he said, “you realize, you put more of a value on what you buy and what you consume when you realize all the work that goes in to bring it to you.”
