'Christmas is For Kids' still needs donations

ELLSWORTH - Santa's helpers at Downeast Community Partners have been busy collecting presents for their "Christmas is For Kids" program, but they still could use some help.

The Hancock County Sheriff's Office, area police, businesses and residents help Santa by providing for around 300 local kids in Hancock and Washington counties, but there is still a long list remaining, organizers say.

“The most rewarding thing is when I see parents come in and there is tears in their eyes when they leave because they are so elated because, seriously, it would be the only Christmas their kids have,” said Sherrie Curtis, a receptionist Downeast Community Partners. “These parents are the ones that really touch my heart.”

It's extremely touching to hear what the children want, especially when it's something like socks or warm bedding, one volunteer said. Several teenagers remain on the list.

Anyone interested in helping out the program can contact Sharrie Curtis at 207-610-5908 or email her at: [email protected]
