Rep. Bruce Poliquin, who lost his bid for re-election during the ranked-choice runoff for Maine's 2nd Congressional District, is asking the judge to throw out the ranked-choice vote results and name him the winner, or order another election.
Arguments were heard Wednesday and the decision is expected next week.
"There is a chance that the case could be appealed to the First Circuit in Boston and ultimately there is a chance it could be appealed to the United States Supreme Court. We don't have a problem with judicial review of this law. We're confident it will stand up to any kind of scrutiny. But we just hope this is over soon so we can get on having the correct person take office in Washington, D.C.," John Brautigam, attorney for the League of Women Voters, said.
Regardless of the decision, it is likely the opposing side would appeal.
The next Congress will be sworn in on January 3rd.
