Latest transportation tech showcased at annual conference

AUGUSTA - People from around Maine and the country gathered in Augusta Thursday to explore the latest technology being used in transportation.

Organizers said topics included autonomous cars, smart cities and work to modernize transportation systems.

"We as transportation officials, planners, policymakers have to really take these things into consideration because we're not going to be able to build our way out of all the congestion and those things," Maine Transportation Commissioner David Bernhardt said. "To become more efficient, we need to use new technology."

The commissioner said some of the new technology is already starting to be used in the southern part of the state.

More than 700 people attended the 68th annual Maine Transportation Conference.
