KENNEBUNKPORT (WGME) – As the state funeral for former President George H.W. Bush was drawing to a close at the nation’s capitol on Wednesday, mourners gathered to say farewell near the president’s summer home at Walker’s Point in Kennebunkport.
Among those who were in Kennebunk to pay tribute was Saco resident Donald Lauzier, who played “Taps” for the nation’s 41st president.
Also on hand were Lesa Angelos and Sue Rioux, volunteers with the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, who kept watch over the growing memorial outside the Bush family’s summer home.
“He was just the most amazing family man,” Angelos said.
The cards they collected from admirers will be sent to the family of the WW II veteran and Kennebunkport’s favorite son.
While the funerals for the late president took place outside the state, people in Maine are planning a memorial for President Bush on Gooch’s Beach at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
